Effect of Red Light on Plants
Red light is radiation with wavelengths between 620 and 750 nm. These wavelengths are within the visible spectrum and red light has a pronounced effect on both photosynthesis and flowering. However, plants grown under only red light may not have the desired characteristics. For example, plants grown with only red light can have skinny, stretched stems (“etiolation”) with fewer leaves. This is particularly true if the plants are young.
Effect of Blue Light on Plants
Blue light is radiation with wavelengths between 450 and 495 nm. However, blue light is less effective than red light for driving photosynthesis. In addition to playing an important role in photosynthesis, blue light is well known to suppress stem elongation (“stretching” or etiolation).
