Have you seen fabric grow pots (also known as “Smart Pots”) or “Air Pots” in a local gardening store or online in medicinal plants growing pictures? Wondering if smart pots and air pots are good for growing medicinal plants in indoor grow tent?
Smart grow pots and air grow pots provide extra oxygen at the roots, which is a good thing. In fact, that’s a big part of what makes hydro so effective at increasing medicinal plants growth rates, and smart pots capture some of that power. Growing medicinal plants in smart pots or air pots gives you some of the advantages of growing hydro, while allowing you to still hand-water your plants in soil or coco coir.
The Smart Pot is basically a patented soft-sided container either of round or square shape, made of heavy-duty fabric providing the roots with improved aeration and drainage. As they reach the edge of the pot the roots are air-pruned, which prevents circling and results in more new active roots starting to grow, increasing the plant’s overall growth rate and well being bringing in a bigger yield.
Smart pots sizes range from 3 to 20 gallons, fitting every project no matter the size and come with or without handles which I personally recommend as they make the lifting and transporting way easier.
An Air Pot is a plastic container with holes around the sides. One of its best features is its rigid design, which makes it easier and less dangerous to move around than a Smart Pot. The size is taller and slimmer when compared to a regular growing container and that may make it possible to place more plants in a smaller space. The thin base of an Air Pot means plants have a tendency to be much less stable on the floor, particularly if they’re placed up high, and huge plants could simply tip over.
Air Pot containers assist in preventing plants from getting root-bound and always having to be transplanted. That is achieved by “air-pruning” roots on the sides, which usually prevents your roots from wrapping about the edges of your container and “choking” the plants.
The amount and quality of your final product rely on healthy growth from germination through harvest. For example, the yield of a medicinal plants can be decreased by:
-Stunted seedling growth due to inconsistent moisture content in the growing medium.
- Over heating at any stage of growth. This can slow growth, decrease yield and affect the flavor or odor of the bud.
- Root bound plants cannot absorb enough nutrients and cannot stretch properly during flowering. They are stressed and will produce fewer buds.
The cannabinoid, terpene and flavonoid content of a bud can be affected by temperature, moisture and root health as well. While you enjoy the leafy green medicinal plants in your grow room, most of the important action is taking place down in the soil. With the right container you will facilitate healthy root growth and from healthy roots grow big, heavy, crystalline buds.
There are several major benefits for shifting your grow to a Smart or Air-Pot.
Both Air Pots and Smart Pots have advantages over growing medicinal plants in plastic or ceramic containers. They oxygenate the roots, prevent root binding, keep plants cool and encourage short, sturdy, healthy growth. Both types of aerated containers will help you grow healthier plants with higher yields and more flavorful buds when compared with regular containers.
