The harvesting period is a very important time for any grower as you have patiently tended your plants and now this is when you reap your rewards. But what is the best method of trimming your leaves once the plant is harvested? There are differences in opinion in the indoor plants growing world as to which method works best – wet trimming or dry trimming. Here we explain a bit more about each of these methods.
Dry trimming
Quite in vogue these days, dry trimming involves hanging the harvested branches to dry upside down - after pulling off the fan leaves but before snipping the un-manicured buds. Because they handle large amounts of indoor plants, wet trimming is the preferred method of large-scale commercial producers.
By keeping the leaflets, the buds dry more slowly and more evenly because the extra plant matter keeps the moisture for longer. Dry trimming, however, is not without risk, particularly in wet climates, where it can cause mould to grow on the crop because of excess moisture content.
Outdoor large-scale producers and guerrilla growers have long opted for dry trimming mostly because they don't have the time to work in wet conditions. This is why they harvest as soon as practicable and transport the product to an indoor warehouse for a more leisurely drying process.
Wet trimming is the recommended method for those that are beginners to growing as it easier than dry trimming, so this could be the right method for you if you are just starting out. There are a few reasons that it is more straightforward – the leaves are easier to get to when wet whereas when they are dry they can get stuck to the flowers, this makes the process not only easier but also faster.
Another benefit of wet trimming is that you won’t be faced with moldy buds which can occur if left to dry out with the leaves still attached. This is more likely to occur if you live in an area with high humidity so it is worth considering wet trimming if that refers to you. With wet trimming, your buds will also be a little prettier.
You should now have enough information to decide whether wet or dry trim is best for you. But regardless of whether you choose the wet trimming or dry trimming method you will need to get your hands on some equipment (check out our reviews below for some of the best on the market) to be able to successfully trim your plants. Make sure you are well equipped with everything you need before you start trimming as this is a very important part of the harvesting process.
