Rosin is a concentrate without solubilizers and any chemicals. Generally speaking, when we want to extract high-concentration products from plants, there are usually two methods: high temperature and high-pressure extraction and solvent extraction. Using a solvent is a relatively simple method: THC and CBD are easily extracted with liquids such as alcohol and oil, but the concentration of this extract is not high, and the rosin extracted by high temperature and high pressure will be cleaner. If you choose to buy rosin presses in the form of plant concentrate, it’s much more expensive, so it’s worth making your own.
Rosin is a living resin in solid form, a sticky substance derived from solvent-free extraction, which requires the application of heat and pressure to the plant material. It is also known as Solvent Free Hash Oil (SHO). The plant material used as input can be dry sieved hash, flower, or ice water hash, also known as bubble hash.
Rosin was first introduced to the community in 2006 by Compashon through ICMag. However, it became popular in 2015 as Phil Salazar (alias Soilgrown) started making and photographing it while experimenting with lower quality hashes.
This discovery was accidental because Phil didn’t expect the result when he pressed the hash. He just noticed that the process creates resin and dries the hash. The rosin is formed when the hash is placed between parchment paper and pressed against a hot pat.
Later, he perfected the process with a hair straightener. So far, professionals have commercialized the process and used industrial presses to extract different types of rosin.
CLEARLY GOLD MINI 4 Ton SQUISH Rosin Press
Features:
All Clearly Gold rosin presses come standard with a hand pump and a pressure gauge so there’s no extra surprises when you price out your perfect setup. As weight is always a concern for portability, Clearly Gold, has designed the presses to be as minimal as possible without sacrificing any strength of the unit. The 1.5 inch thick plates helps spread the heat more evenly. This creates less temperature fluctuation at the surface of the plates to give a more consistent and repeatable process. Temperature is controlled by industrial grade controllers for long service life and accuracy. Temperature range control is 0 to 300 degrees F and each controller maintains its own plate temperature. Custom temperature differentials can also be made for the upper and lower plates simultaneously. Heat is supplied by multiple 200 watt heating cartridges.
Pure Pressure Helix 3 Rosin Press
Features:
Helix uses the proven design of its larger sibling, Pikes Peak, to give you the same quality rosin in a small package. Helix uses Pure Pressure’s trademark Pressware Technology, which allows you to set the proper temperature and pressure in each press. Using its two (2) premium 6061 aluminum hot plates, the Helix can press up to 6 grams of flowers, or with its lead screw twist technology, a 10 gram Kief or Hash can produce up to three (3) tons of force at a time.
To produce good quality rosin, one must know how to operate the rosin press. There are three key elements when trying to produce Rosin with a rosin press.
Heat:
During the press, heat applied to the plant should be regulated to protect all cannabinoids and terpenes. High temperatures can burn these elements, ruining the rosin and producing a bland, tasteless yield. Therefore, it is ideal to produce rosin at the lowest possible temperature.
Pressure:
The heat applied to plant cannot be too high, so we increase the pressure to make up for it. With high pressures, good rosin can be produced without degrading the overall quality of the rosin. To measure how good a rosin press is, we observe its ability to provide high pressure enough to lower heat to a point where we can yield high-quality rosin without degradation.
Time:
Time is also an important factor along with heat and pressure. The time for which the plant is exposed to heat must be limited to retain the terpenes and avoid degradation as well. If rosin is in a rosin press for too long it can come out burnt and broken.
Aside from the process itself, the user operating the press might have to make multiple attempts at extracting the rosin to understand what conditions give the best yield.
From size to pressure to price, these are some of the most important factors to consider when buying a rosin press. The right machine for you depends on what you are pressing rosin for and what features you need. Fortunately, there’s an affordable option for every kind of user.
