Approximately 5% of solar radiation reaching the earth is ultraviolet-A (320-400nm). These light wavelengths drive relatively little photosynthesis, but trigger other responses in plants, primarily defense mechanisms. Comparable to human skin becoming tan, plants produce anthocyanins and other valuable nutrients and chemicals to become stronger. UV radiation is absent from most grow rooms and greenhouses because of UV-filtering glazing materials and the lack of UV in most grow lights.
